A thriller onstage at Granite Theatre

Some stories seem made for the stage. “The Girl on the Train” isn’t one of them. The action sequences and scenes that are, as the title suggests, on a train don’t square with the traditional idea of theater — which is why it’ll be fascinating to see how the thriller is adapted for the intimate confines of the Granite Theatre in Westerly.

The tale is culled from Paula Hawkins’ best-selling 2015 novel. The titular “Girl,” Rachel Watson, is a blackout drunk and thus an unreliable narrator. She has lost her marriage and her job and rides the train daily, fascinated by an apparently loving couple she spies from the window. But then the woman in that couple disappears, and Rachel ill-advisedly decides to investigate what happened.

Brad Delzer directs a cast that features Sydney Hermanson as Rachel Watson, along with Hannah Avery, Katie Brough, Chelsea Mitchel, Wylette Selvidio, Joyce Leven, and Caitlin Robert.

    “The Girl on the Train,” Friday through June 10, Granite Theatre, 1 Granite St., Westerly; 7:30 p.m. Thurs.-Sat. and 2 p.m. Sun.; $25-$30; (401) 596-2341, granitetheatre.org.
