This seems like a mismatch: Alan Cumming, the Scottish actor who played the Emcee on Broadway in “Cabaret” and Eli Gold on “The Good Wife,” and Ari Shapiro, who hosts NPR’s “All Things Considered” broadcast, teaming up to do cabaret.

    What!

Their show is called “Och & Oy! A Considered Cabaret,” and this night of stories and songs has drawn rave reviews. It has been described as “an unexpected twist on the classic lounge act,” with songs ranging from “Anything You Can Do (I Can Do Better)” to “You’re the Top.”

“Och & Oy!” comes to Connecticut College on Friday.

While Shapiro is a journalist, he also sings. He often guests with the band Pink Martini and has performed on four of their albums and with them at Carnegie Hall and the Hollywood Bowl.

Cumming’s stage and screen credits are amusingly wide-ranging, from “Macbeth” on Broadway to “Schmigadoon!” on TV to “Burlesque” on film. He’s proven himself the best TV host out there, elevating a rather conventional reality-show contest with his fierce and funny turn on “The Traitor”; give this man an Emmy!

“Och & Oy! A Considered Cabaret,” 7:30 p.m. Friday, Athey Center, Palmer Auditorium, Connecticut College, 270 Mohegan Ave., New London; seating, depending on section, is $30-$50 adults, $25-$45 seniors, and $15-$25 students; (860) 439-2787, onstage.conncoll.edu.
