Hartford – The State Bond Commission today approved more than $1 million in projects for southeast Connecticut, including money to buy land around the Naval Submarine Base and to make repairs at Fort Trumbull and Fort Griswold state parks.

The towns of Groton and Ledyard would receive $455,000 and $225,000, respectively, to buy land around the sub base to prevent development from encroaching on operations there. Such a buffer between the base facilities and neighboring properties is part of the scoring matrix that the military uses when assessing bases and making closure decision.

Groton plans to purchase property at the intersection of Crystal Lake Road and Military Highway. Ledyard would buy about 20 acres of land alongside the base on Kings Highway (Route 12).

The commission also approved $492,000 for the two state parks. At Fort Trumbull in New London, the funds would go to visitor center repairs and repointing fort masonry. For Fort Griswold in Groton, it would fund monument house and museum roof repairs, basement waterproofing, and repointing of the memorial gate, powder magazine and shop furnace.

The commission approved an additional $800,000 for emergency electrical repairs and future capital projects at Ella T. Grasso Southeastern Technical High School in Groton.

Also, the town of Griswold will receive $343,500 to help construct a 3,000-square-foot addition to its senior center.
