Malloy to rally support for UConn proposals

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Gov. Dannel Malloy is gathering with University of Connecticut students this week to rally support for his proposals to strengthen the sciences and boost enrollment at the state's flagship university.

Malloy's proposal calls for $1.5 billion to build new labs and refurbish others, upgrade information technology and renovate and build housing and parking. The effort is expected to attract millions of dollars in research grants and intended to boost high-wage jobs in science and technology.

Malloy is attending the event Monday in Hartford with UConn students, state legislators and other supporters.

Some in the General Assembly have expressed concerns over the cost of the initiative and whether the borrowing would reduce money available for other needs.
