Chester — The state Department of Transportation will hold a public meeting Wednesday on plans to double the fares on the Connecticut River Ferries.

The meeting will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Chester Meeting House. The DOT also held a public meeting Monday in Rocky Hill on the fare increases.

The DOT had announced in April plans to raise fares on the Chester-Hadlyme Ferry and the Rocky Hill-Glastonbury Ferry. The department had stated in a press release that the ferries’ costs exceeded their revenues.

The Hadlyme Public Hall Association, a non-profit organization, has suggested alternatives to doubling fares that include having discounts for cars with Connecticut license plates; implementing on-peak and off-peak fare pricing; adding more holiday and weekend hours when ridership is up; and collaborating with state tourism and parks organizations to market the ferries, according to the association’s news release.

Curt Michael, the association’s president, will present petitions opposing doubling the fares at the public hearing Wednesday.
