Connecticut officials call for federal GMO labeling bill
Hartford (AP) — Connecticut officials are calling on Congress to pass legislation requiring the clear labeling of genetically modified foods.
U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal and state Senate President Donald Williams Jr. are joining local advocates for a Friday news conference at the state Capitol complex in Hartford to urge federal action on the issue.
On Monday, the Connecticut General Assembly passed a bill requiring special labels on food sold in the state that contains entirely or partially genetically modified ingredients, so long as other states pass similar legislation. Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has said he will sign it into law.
Blumenthal has co-sponsored bipartisan federal legislation that would require the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to label genetically engineered foods.
