    Heavy rains, wind expected overnight

Hartford – Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has issued a warning to residents across the state in advance of what he referred to as a “major coastal storm,” that will impact the state beginning late tonight and lasting through the day Wednesday.

“The current forecast is calling for heavy rain, minor flooding, and high winds, so I want people to take common-sense precautions to secure their property and be aware of deteriorating conditions as the height of this storm approaches,” Malloy said in a statement. “If you have travel plans tomorrow, please use caution on the roadways and give yourself some extra time to get your destination.”

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory and flood watch in New London County effective at midnight through 2 p.m. Wednesday.

As much as 2 to 3 inches of rain is forecast throughout the state with wind gusts up to 50 mph inland and 55 mph at the coast, according to the National Weather Service. The heavy rains could lead to coastal flooding with tides 2 to 2½ feet above normal.

Malloy said the Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security will continue to monitor the storm’s progress and is ready to coordinate any response or assistance that may be necessary.
