Waterbury fires displace nearly 50 people

Waterbury (AP) — Waterbury officials say fires at a condominium complex and a multifamily home have left nearly 50 people homeless. No residents were injured, but one firefighter was treated for a burn to his hand.

Firefighters responded to the blazes Tuesday.

Paul Shipman of the American Red Cross told the Republican-American of Waterbury the agency is helping 11 families displaced by the two fires. He says they include 20 adults and 12 children.

Forty people at a condo complex on Waterville Street were left homeless. A resident says the blaze began as a grease fire on a stove.

The second fire at a Rose Street home displaced eight residents. An 8-month-old pit bull was revived by rescue personnel and taken to a veterinarian. The cause of that fire is under investigation.
