Body of missing canoeist found in Cedar Lake in Chester

CHESTER — The body of 48-year-old Paul Haney of Manchester was recovered in Cedar Lake Sunday at 11:15 a.m.

State Department of Energy and Environmental Protection officials said Hanley and Carol Bremser, 49, of Chester were thrown into the water when their canoe capsized Saturday evening.

Bremser was rescued by a nearby boat Saturday night and transported to a medical clinic for treatment.

Connecticut State Police, a sonar boat and local dive teams are searched Cedar Lake Saturday night and Sunday morning for Haney. The Chester town beach and the YMCA's Camp Hazen are closed today so crews can search without interference from swimmers.

Teams from the Environmental Conservation Police, the Chester Fire Department and Haddam Fire Department were also searching for the man.

DEEP spokesperson originally identified the couple as both being from Chester and both 49.
