Police ID man shot, wounded by New Haven officer

New Haven (AP) — Authorities have identified a man who was shot and wounded by a New Haven officer after reportedly rushing at police with a knife.

Police say 38-year-old Robert Ursini, of New Haven, was shot Tuesday morning at an apartment building for elderly and disabled people. Officers were responding to a report of a disturbed man who was threatening suicide.

Officials say an officer shot Ursini in his lower abdomen in self-defense. It's not clear how many times Ursini was shot.

Ursini is being treated at Yale-New Haven Hospital. His condition hasn't been released. Police say he was conscious and alert after he was shot.

Authorities haven't released the officer's name.

City police have called in state police to investigate under normal protocols for shootings by officers.
