R.I. ferries offered to oldest continuous July 4 celebration
PROVIDENCE (AP) — Rhode Island ferry service will be offered for the first time for spectators at the nation's oldest continuous Fourth of July celebration.
The state Department of Transportation says it's offering ferry service to Bristol, R.I., for the first time for anyone hoping to avoid the heavy traffic leading to the parade route.
Bristol officials say about 100,000 people turn out for the parade typically.
The ferry normally travels from Providence to Newport.
It will stop at a pier in Bristol, one block from the parade route, on its way to Newport. It'll stop again in Bristol on return trips to Providence Wednesday.
The ferry leaves Providence at 9 a.m., 12:15 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
It leaves Newport at 10:40 a.m., 1:55 p.m. and 5:10 p.m.
Several of the ferry trips are already sold out.
The parade begins at 10:30 a.m.
