Home health aide sentenced for theft of savings bonds from elderly woman

A home health aide was sentenced to 57 months in prison for stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars in savings bonds from an elderly woman she was working for, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Jhanannie Singh, a citizen of Guyana last living in Queens, N.Y., stole the U.S. savings bonds from her client, who had purchased them to give to her grandchildren and other family members. Singh, 52, also goes by the names “Jasmine” and “Sharmala Persaud,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

She was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Kari Dooley in Bridgeport on Monday.

After the victim died, Singh contacted a man named Glen Campbell, also known as “Nick,” to help redeem the bonds at a financial institution. Campbell got another person involved to cash in the bonds. Under the scheme, Singh and Campbell would receive a portion of the proceeds, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

Investigators set up over 100 savings bond purchases, with face values ranging from $50 to $1,000, with Singh and Campbell between October 2020 and January 2021. Campbell reportedly traveled to Connecticut to complete the purchases.

The two were arrested on Jan. 29, 2021, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said. At the time of their arrest, investigators had found over $287,000 in savings bonds from Singh and Campbell.

Singh reportedly tried to bribe a witness in June and July 2021 to submit false testimony in court, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

She has been in custody since Aug. 4, 2021, and she pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy on Aug. 19, 2022. She faces immigration proceedings following her prison term, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

Campbell pleaded guilty to conspiracy on June 15, 2022, and is awaiting sentencing.
