STORRS — A University of Connecticut student died Thursday afternoon from what school officials say may have been a medical emergency.

The student's identity was not released, and university officials said they were not able to provide additional information about the investigation at this time.

UConn has been working closely with the student's family to provide support, university spokeswoman Stephanie Reitz said.

Preliminary indications suggest the untimely death may have been the result of a medical emergency, Reitz said. It is not being treated as suspicious, she added.

UConn safety personnel responded to a student dorm around 1:25 p.m. to a reported medical emergency at the North residence complex on the Storrs campus. They were directed to a room where the student had been found unresponsive, Reitz said.

She said UConn's emergency medical technicians provided treatment until Windham Hospital paramedics arrived and pronounced the student dead.

The state medical examiner's office will conduct an autopsy, Reitz said.

Student Health & Wellness is providing mental health outreach for any students needing assistance, Reitz said. In addition, she said, the Dean of Student's office, UConn Residential Life, and other departments are working with friends, faculty members, and others in the residence hall who knew the student.
