Police: Robber held Wendy's manager at knifepoint in Middletown

Middletown — Police say they are looking for armed robbers who held a Wendy's manager at knifepoint around closing time Monday night.

No one was injured during the robbery, which happened about 11:30 p.m. at the fast-food restaurant at 960 Washington St., Middletown Police Chief Erik Costa said in a news release.

The first robber got in when an employee unlocked the front door for a drive-thru order, Costa said. The suspect then grabbed the manager, threatened her with a knife and demanded she open the restaurant safe and give him the cash, Costa said.

While this was happening, a second robber waited outside the door, gun in hand, the chief said.

Once they had the money, the two men ran to a nearby car, police said. The car pulled away and sped east on Washington Street. An officer spotted the fleeing car and tried to stop it, but the driver refused to pull over, Costa said.

Police chased the car east on Route 66 to Interstate 91 South, stopping the pursuit in the area of Exit 14 in Wallingford, Costa said.

The car is described as a gray or silver sedan, possibly a Toyota, the chief said.

The knife-wielding suspect was wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt with white markings, black sneakers and dark pants, Costa said.

The man holding the gun was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans with a mask over his face, Costa said.

Anyone with information about the robbery may call Detective C. Iovene of the Middletown Police Department's Major Investigations Unit at (860) 638-4148.
