Two 14-year-olds arrested after fleeing stolen car that crashed into police cruiser

Two juveniles were arrested in connection with a stolen car that crashed into a police cruiser in Shelton early Sunday.

Police at 2:15 a.m. received the report of a vehicle being stolen from a driveway before patrol officers located the stolen car and another vehicle that appeared to be traveling along with it, according to the Shelton Police Department. Both motorists fled when officers tried to pull them over, so police did not pursue them.

Shortly after that, police received the report that the motorist following the stolen vehicle had crashed and the driver was fleeing on foot, police said. Officers headed to the crash and found the wreck as well as the stolen car, according to police.

The driver of the stolen vehicle tried to flee and struck a police cruiser before three people inside got out and fled on foot, police said. Two suspects were apprehended following a foot pursuit and were identified as 14-year-old Hamden residents, according to police.

The juveniles were charged with larceny of a motor vehicle, engaging in pursuit, reckless driving, interfering with police and operating a motor vehicle without a license. They were each released to a parent.

Police said one of the juveniles was being monitored with an ankle bracelet. His probation officer was notified of the arrest.

Shelton police used the incident to remind residents to lock their vehicles and take their keys inside, as the car stolen early Sunday was left unsecured with the keys inside the vehicle.
