Two people were killed in a head-on crash on the Silas Deane Highway in Wethersfield on Saturday, police said.

Officers responded to reports of a serious two-vehicle crash in the area of 1293 Silas Deane Highway at 2:32 p.m. and found that the vehicles had collided head on and both drivers had life-threatening injuries, according to the Wethersfield Police Department.

Both drivers were taken to Hartford Hospital where they were pronounced dead by 4:37 p.m., police said. They had not yet been identified.

Members of the Mid-State Accident Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and were investigating. Parts of the highway were closed between Hewitt Street and Town Line Road, police said.
