Fire at CCSU displaces 60 students

New Britain — Sixty students were displaced from their rooms Monday evening after there was a fire in a residence hall at Central Connecticut State University, according to school officials.

Officials said the fire ignited around 6 p.m. on the first floor of the F. Don James residence hall, one of the oldest residence halls on the campus.

Students were evacuated from the building, and firefighters arrived within minutes to extinguish the fire, officials said. They said the sprinkler system also worked to keep the fire under control.

Officials said the university is working on temporary housing for the students, but in the meantime students have gathered at Memorial Hall, one of the dining halls, and the student center.

The state fire marshal is investigating the fire.

"The university is grateful everyone is safe. The students did exactly what they should in a situation like this, and we are working on making them comfortable in a new space," said university President Zulma Toro.
