Three dogs, ferret and five birds die in Bloomfield house fire

BLOOMFIELD — Nine pets died in a house fire in the southeastern corner of town Monday morning, the fire chief said.

None of the residents of the home were injured. All five, two adults and three children, were displaced, according to Willie Jones, chief of the Blue Hills Fire Department.

Three of the family's four dogs died in the fire, along with a ferret and five birds, Jones said.

The house is badly damaged, with the most damage in the kitchen, he said.

"There is extensive damage on the first floor and heavy smoke damage throughout," Jones said.

A neighbor reported the fire at 10:23 a.m., and firefighters had most of the fire knocked down by 10:36 a.m.

The fire was declared to be under control, so that it was no longer spreading, at 11:13 a.m., he said.

The house is near the Hartford and Windsor town lines.
