Officials: 2 horses rescued after being stuck in mud for hours

LEBANON — Two horses are expected to make a full recovery after being rescued from a muddy area in the woods on Saturday, fire officials said.

The Lebanon Volunteer Fire Department said one of the horses had been stuck in the mud for over seven hours before it was rescued.

"Two horses were stuck 3/4 of the mile into the woods in a swampy area," the fire department said on Facebook. "They had wandered into the area and became stuck up to their undersides."

Together, the Durham Animal Response Team and area firefighters worked to extract both large animals from the mud in five hours, the fire department said.

The department said a vet was able to come out to the scene, which was in the area of North Street, and assess both horses. Neither the 40 responding personnel nor the horses were injured in the rescue.

"At 18:21, both horses had been warmed up enough to stand and we are happy to report both got up without issue and were happily eating some fresh hay," town fire officials said.
