1st case of West Nile confirmed in Rhode Island this year
PROVIDENCE (AP) — Rhode Island health officials say they have confirmed the first human case of West Nile Virus in the state this year.
The Department of Health on Friday said a 66-year-old from Providence County began to experience symptoms of West Nile on Sept. 15.
West Nile is spread by infected mosquitoes. Symptoms include fever, headache, body aches, nausea, vomiting and sometimes swollen lymph glands or a rash.
Health Director Nicole Alexander-Scott says the best way to prevent West Nile is to stop mosquitoes from breeding and to avoid mosquito bites.
She recommends people get rid of any standing water around their homes and yards, and to use wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants when outside, especially at sunrise and sunset.
