Police: Day care owner charged with leaving children alone

STAMFORD, Conn. — Police have charged a Connecticut child care provider with leaving six children alone in her house while she was out running an errand.

Stamford police say 49-year-old Bernanie "Bernie" Jean-Louis has been charged with six counts of risk of injury to a minor. The Stamford Advocate reports that a Department of Children and Families employee discovered the children — ranging in age from 11 months to 11 years — left alone Monday afternoon for about half an hour.

Jean-Louis said Tuesday she left her 21-year-old daughter in charge and the children were left unsupervised for only about a minute.

Police say the social worker reported being inside the house for 25 minutes before Jean-Louis returned from the pharmacy.

    The investigation is ongoing.
