Inmate climbs barbed-wire fence to escape, but recaptured

CHESHIRE, Conn. (AP) — State police say an inmate at a Connecticut prison escaped by scaling a barbed-wire fence and stealing a car from a pizza deliveryman, but was later recaptured.

Officials say 25-year-old Luis Clarke, of Wallingford, was serving an 18-month sentence for a probation violation in a minimum-security unit at Cheshire Correctional Institution when he made his brief escape on Wednesday.

He now faces new charges of first-degree escape and third-degree larceny that could land him in a high-security state prison.

Police say Clark hid during a recreational break and was reported missing around 6 p.m.

A blood-stained sweatshirt was later found, indicating Clark had been cut by the barbed wire.

Police were able to track his movements through a cellphone that the pizza deliveryman had left behind in the stolen car. Clark was recaptured Wednesday night in Meriden.
