Weicker, Rell and Malloy to attend Ned Lamont's inaugural

Membership never expires in this exclusive institution: the Connecticut governors club.

All four living predecessors of Ned Lamont received invitations to his swearing-in Wednesday in Hartford, in addition to Nikki O’Neill, the widow of the late Gov. William A. O’Neill, The Courant has learned.

O’Neill is not expected to attend. Neither is John G. Rowland, the twice-imprisoned Republican who resigned as governor in 2004 amid a public corruption scandal.

An invitation was extended to Rowland, but he declined, according to people familiar with planning of the event.

Departing Democrat Dannel P. Malloy, Republican M. Jodi Rell and Lowell Weicker Jr. have accepted.

Weicker won the state’s top office in 1990 under the banner of A Connecticut Party, which is a fitting moniker for Lamont’s inaugural festivities.

While it’s not uncommon for incoming governors to invite their predecessors to join them, it’s a point of emphasis of Lamont as he looks to show solidarity on his first day in office.
