Putnam ash landfill operator seeks to expand site

NORWICH (AP) — The operator of an ash landfill in Putnam is applying for an expansion that it says would keep it in operation for an additional 25 to 30 years.

The Norwich Bulletin reports that Wheelabrator Technologies has filed for state and federal approval.

The landfill takes in ash waste from facilities that burn towns' garbage.

It has used 7 million cubic yards of space since it opened in 1999 and currently has space to operate only another few years. The proposed expansion would add 17 million cubic yards of space.

Putnam Mayor Barney Seney says the expansion would be good for all because it's the only facility in the state that can handle ash waste.

The application review process is expected to take longer than a year. The expansion also needs town approval.
