5 die from fentanyl overdoses within 15 hours in Hartford

HARTFORD (AP) — Officials say five men in Hartford died from drug overdoses within 15 hours of each other.

Police Lt. Paul Cicero said the spate of deaths began Monday night and continued into Tuesday, and two of the men died at the same location.

The Hartford Police Department wrote in a tweet they are seeing the fentanyl present in pill form and mixed with heroin, cocaine and crack cocaine. The tweet linked to the state Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services for those seeking help with recovery efforts.

Police say there have been 38 fatal overdoses in the city so far this year, eclipsing the 22 deaths reported in all of 2018.

Diana Shaw, a spokesman for the mental health agency, said Connecticut had 1,017 accidental overdose deaths last year, with 75 percent of them including fentanyl.
