NORWALK (AP) — A Maine man accused of raping and strangling an 11-year-old girl in 1986 was to be brought back to Connecticut on Friday to face murder and kidnapping charges.

Marc Karun, 53, agreed not to fight extradition during a court appearance in the afternoon in Bangor, Maine. Police in Norwalk said they were going to drive Karun later in the day to Norwalk, where he will be booked and detained until a court arraignment on Monday.

Police allege Karun, a former Norwalk resident who was living in Stetson, Maine, killed Kathleen Flynn on Sept. 23, 1986, as the sixth-grader was walking home from Ponus Ridge Middle School. Karun has been convicted of sexually assaulting or kidnapping four other female victims in the 1980s, and he is a registered sex offender for one of those crimes.

Maine officials, meanwhile, disclosed Friday that authorities seized 88 rifles and handguns that Karun illegally possessed at the Stetson house. Karun was arrested Wednesday in the Flynn investigation as he left his house and police later obtained a search warrant that led to the discovery of the guns, which he is prohibited from having because he is a convicted felon, District Attorney Marianne Lynch said.

Karun was charged with illegally possessing guns, but the charges were dropped to allow him to be extradited, Lynch said.

Messages seeking comment were left Friday with lawyers who will be representing Karun in Connecticut. Zachary Smith, a Bangor lawyer who represented Karun on Friday, declined to comment on the allegations.

Norwalk police wrote in an arrest warrant that they obtained samples of Karun's DNA in 2017 but that the testing came back either negative or inconclusive in connection with Kathleen's killing. Police noted the evidence obtained from the crime scene was more than 30 years old. Officials, however, said the way Kathleen was killed was similar to the other attacks on female victims of which Karun was convicted.

The four other attacks occurred between January 1986 and June 1988. Karun served about 10 years in prison.

Kathleen's mother reported her missing after she failed to return home from school. Search teams found her body early the next morning, more than 100 feet off a path near the school that she used to walk home.
