Connecticut boy shot while vacationing in Puerto Rico

NEW HAVEN (AP) — A Connecticut boy who was shot in the chest while on vacation in Puerto Rico is being flown back the state for treatment.

WTNH-TV reports that 12-year-old Jayden Ortiz was shot July 24 while his family was stopped at a gas station. It's not clear the circumstances of the shooting, but the station reports that the boy had been staying with his grandparents in Coamo for the summer.

Ortiz's father said he flew from Connecticut to Puerto Rico after the shooting to be with his son. He said the boy is in critical, but stable condition and will be brought by a medical flight to Yale New Haven Hospital.

Ortiz attends Roberto Clemente Leadership Academy in New Haven. The family has been crowdfunding to pay for his medical bills.
