Rutgers rallies to stun UConn again
Piscataway, N.J. – This wasn’t as stunning as last year’s defeat, but it sure was close.
A year after losing to Rutgers on an 81-yard touchdown pass to Tim Brown with 22 seconds remaining, UConn let another late lead slip away and suffered a devastating defeat.
The Scarlet Knights scored 10 points in the final 3:53, including a game-winning 34 field goal by San San Te with 13 seconds left, to stun the Huskies, 27-24, in a wild Big East Conference game before 48,431 at Rutgers Stadium.
The Huskies, who overcame an early 17-7 deficit to take a 24-17 lead into the fourth quarter, allowed Rutgers (3-2, 1-0) to tie the game on a 52-yard touchdown pass from Chas Dodd to Mark Harrison with 3:53 remaining.
Then the UConn offense went 3-and-out for the second straight series and Rutgers immediately drove into field goal range, the key play a 45-yard completion from Dodd to Jeremy Deering, who got behind safety Jerome Junior, setting up Te’s game-winner.
