UConn rallies, advances in NCAA men's soccer tournament
UConn used a furious second-half rally to overcome Rhode Island in overtime, 4-3, in the first round of the NCAA Division I men's soccer championships on Thursday at Storrs.
The Huskies (12-5-2) trailed 3-1 with 38 minutes left in regulation. Freshman Ibrahima Diop led the way, recording his first hat trick, scoring all three goals in the second half and in the overtime period. He made it 3-2 in the 76th minute, tied the game in the 79th minute and scored the game winner 8:57 into overtime.
Senior Abdou Mbacke Thiam had a goal and an assist, while Dayonn Harris, Felix Metzler and Cole Venner each had an assist for UConn. Tyler Dickson scored both goals for URI (15-5).
UConn advances to the second round, playing at No. 2 Indiana on Sunday at noon.
