    UConn women thrash Southern Connecticut in exhibition final

    Senior Katie Lou Samuelson scored 26 to lead the second-ranked UConn women’s basketball team past Southern Connecticut State on Thursday night, 99-45, in the Huskies’ final exhibition game at the XL Center in Hartford.

    All 11 Huskies played with nine scoring. Freshman Olivia Nelson-Ododa had 16 points and a team-high 11 rebounds for UConn while senior Napheesa Collier had 13 points, nine rebounds and nine assists.

    Freshman Christyn Williams had 18 points and junior Crystal Dangerfield scored 10 for the Huskies, who won their regular-season opener over Ohio State on Sunday, 85-53.

    UConn shot 52.4-percent from the field, including 37.5-percent from the 3-point line. It also finished with an edge in rebounds (47-26) and assists (25-11).

    The Huskies resume regular-season play when they face Vanderbilt on Saturday in the Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Showcase at Mohegan Sun Arena (6 p.m.)
