UConn hoops signs late recruit, 6-foot-9 forward Springs

Storrs — UConn has added a late recruit to its basketball roster, formally announcing that 6-foot-9 power forward Richie Springs enrolled at the school. Springs announced his decision earlier in the week on Twitter.

Springs, from Brooklyn, New York, graduated this spring from the MacDuffie School in Granby, Massachusetts.

UConn said the 17-year-old made the decision last weekend to forgo his planned postgraduate year and enroll at UConn this fall. The team will play one more season in the American Athletic Conference before returning to the Big East.

Coach Dan Hurley says Springs gives the Huskies a versatile frontcourt player with "a ton of upside."

He joins guard James Bouknight, who played with Springs at MacDuffie. Other freshmen include Jalen Gaffney and forward Akok Akok, who redshirted after enrolling in January.

"Richie is an unbelievable person, very bright and very, very coachable," MacDuffie coach Jacque Rivera said in UConn's press release. "Speaking non-athletically, UConn is getting a young man who is caring, selfless and, most importantly, a hard worker in all facets of life. He comes from a great foundation.

"On the court, I don't think he's even begun to scratch the surface of who he's going to be as an athlete. He's got a high floor, and a high ceiling. He's a versatile 6-9, steps out and shoots it, rebounds well out of his area. Once he gets a little bit stronger, I think the sky's the limit for him."
