Massachusetts guard Ducharme commits to UConn women

Caroline Ducharme and Saylor Poffenbarger became friends three years ago when they attended the same basketball camp.

In a little over a year they’ll be together as part of the UConn family.

Ducharme, a 6-foot-1 junior guard from Milton, Mass., has made an oral commitment to join the Huskies. Joe Fenelon of NYGHoops Report was first on Twitter with the news of the commitment.

She is the third player from the Class of 2021 to choose UConn, joining Poffenbarger (6-2 wing, Middletown, Maryland) and Amari DeBerry (6-5 forward, Buffalo, N.Y.). She is rated the No. 41 recruit in the class by ESPNHoopgurlz.

“Caroline called me (Thursday) and we would always talk about the recruiting process and how her experience was,” Poffenbarger said. “When she told me she had committed, I was excited and we talked about being teammates and how much fun that is going to be. It still hasn’t hit me that it’s going to happen.”

Ducharme averaged 25 points, 14 rebounds, five assists, and three blocked shots as a junior in leading Noble and Greenough School in Dedham to the New England Prep School Athletic Council Class AA tournament championship. In the final against Worcester Academy, she had 31 points and 14 rebounds in a 65-42 win.

She was named the 2020 Massachusetts Gatorade Player of the Year.

“Caroline’s really versatile and really competitive,” Poffenbarger said. “She won’t back down. I’ve played against her on the (AAU) circuit. She’s always moving, always thinking, always ready for the next thing. I’m so excited that I’ll be playing with her.”

Ducharme had surgery for a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee in May 2017 but ended up missing just one game to start the season and averaged a double-double as Noble captured the NEPSAC Class A title. A torn shoulder labrum suffered in July 2018 ended her sophomore season before it began.

She attended the trials for USA Basketball’s U-17 national team in 2018, advancing through to the last cut before the 18 finalists were announced.

Ducharme’s older sister, Ashley, recently completed her sophomore season at Brown University.
