UN General Assembly votes 'yes' on Ukraine unity

UNITED NATIONS — The U.N. General Assembly has approved a resolution affirming Ukraine's territorial integrity and calling the referendum that led to Russia's annexation of its Crimean Peninsula illegal.

The vote Thursday was 100 in favor, 11 opposed and 58 abstentions.

The "yes" vote was higher than many diplomats had predicted, with more than half the 193 members of the General Assembly supporting the Ukrainian sponsored resolution.

Unlike the Security Council, General Assembly resolutions are not subject to vetoes nor are they legally binding but they do reflect world opinion.
