Take part in a simulated archaeological dig in East Lyme

The East Lyme Historical Society will hold "A Day on the Dig," a simulated archaeological dig, 10 a.m.-noon Aug. 27 on the grounds of The Thomas Lee House in Niantic. People can explore the past one pile of dirt at a time with town historian Liz Kuchta, high school anthropology teacher Wil Reed, metal detecting expert Rod McCauley and former teacher and local author Jim Littlefield. Learn the techniques and processes of an archaeological dig, from shaving to sifting to recording finds (artifacts recovered will not become the property of the participants). This is a hands-on program, so participants should plan on getting dirty and can bring a kneeling pad if they'd like; all other necessary materials will be provided. This program is open to anyone 10 or up (children must be attended by an adult) and is limited to 24 participants. Registration will start at 8 a.m. Aug. 15 in the entrance way of the East Lyme Community Center on Society Road. The fee is $10 per person (cash or check only) and will include homemade soft ice cream from Carol Stearns of Mountain Dairy at the finish of the program. The public can observe the dig free of charge, and ice cream will be available for purchase. For more information on the historical society, visit eastlymehistoricalsociety.org.
