A lively concert on tap with the Coast Guard Band

The Coast Guard Band has dubbed its Sunday concert “Winter Heat,” but I prefer to think of it as “Spring’s A-Comin’.” It’s all in your perspective, right?

And, in any case, isn’t the Coast Guard Band always in season?

The Sunday “Winter Heat” show highlights compositions by John Mackey, Scott McAllister and Percy Grainger, among others.

Let’s break that down a bit. It’s Grainger’s “Molly on the Shore”; Mackey’s “Redline Tango”; and McAllister’s “Black Dog,” which will feature clarinetist Chief Musician Chantal Hovendick.

In addition, Musician 1st Class Megan Weikleenget will sing “Three Songs for Soprano and Wind Ensemble” by Osvaldo Golijov, and the band will delve into Steve Danyew’s “Vermont State Fair” and Mason Bates’ “Rusty Air in Carolina.

Assistant Director Chief Warrant Officer Richard E. Wyman leads the band for this concert.

U.S. Coast Guard Band, 2 p.m. Sunday, Leamy Concert Hall, Coast Guard Academy, 15 Mohegan Ave., New London; free; (860) 701-6826.
