The lyrical tone of John Legend's 2016 "Darkness and Light" album is reflective, wistful, wise and seems to reflect a hugely successful and genuine artist who's maybe tired or even a bit wounded by life in fame's spotlight.

One of those "be careful what you wish for" things, I guess.

Of course, as a creator and practitioner of time-honored soul music — albeit with contemporary flourishes (courtesy on the new recording of maestro producer Blake Mills) — Legend has all of the melody and atmosphere of obvious influences like Donnie Hathaway, Bill Withers and Al Green. The new depth and context of the songs on "Darkness and Light," though, demonstrate an added dimension and texture to Legend's already substantial legacy.

Legend performs Thursday at the Grand Theater in Foxwoods. It's a makeup date after Legend postponed the originally scheduled June 23 show.

John Legend, 8 p.m. Thursday, Grand Theater, Foxwoods; $75-$175; 1-800-200-2882.
