Straight No Chaser sings Thursday in Sun Arena

The quickest way to ruin an a cappella group performance would be to let me sing as part of the presentation. So I won't be there tonight in the Mohegan Sun Arena when Straight No Chaser, the 12-man vocal group — which ascended to national fame after forming at the humble University of Indiana — takes the stage.

Known for their sophisticated harmonies — as if Brian Wilson, the Eagles and Fleet Foxes were all serenading Sorority Row in Hoosier Land — Straight No Chaser utilize these chops to execute visionary arrangements of a wide range of pop, rock and soul artists from Beyonce and Bruno Mars to Radiohead and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. They've also featured plenty of guest stars on recordings, with the likes of Dolly Parton, Phil Collins, Cee Lo Green, Paul McCartney and Colbie Caillat pitching in.

Finally, as it's only a few days before Christmas, it's worth noting Straight No Chaser are unabashed fans of holiday music as per several seasonal releases. Expect, then, songs of Santa and plenty of secular hits as well.

Straight No Chaser, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Mohegan Sun Arena; $30; 1-800-745-3000.
