New London hosts St. Patrick's Parade

TIM MARTIN/THE DAY Last year's New London Irish Parade.

Downtown New London will be crowded with floats, musicians, dancers and community groups Sunday afternoon during the 2013 St. Patrick's Day Parade.

The theme of the procession, which travels down Bank and State streets, is "Everyone Is Irish For A Day."

Expected to march are Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman.

The Boston riot folk band The Swaggerin' Growlers will perform. Sean Patrick Murray, president of the St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee, describes the group as "Pogues-meets-Murphys."

New London historian Sally Ryan serves as the grand marshal. The parade will feature a new element, the St. Patrick's Day Queen & Court Program, which rewards youngn women between the ages of 18 and 25 who best represent New London County.

A new group, the St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee, is organizing the 2013 event, after the New London Irish Parade Committee bowed out of this venue after a dispute with the city over money.
