Evans a great fit for Durham Wildcats

R.J. Evans’ professional basketball career is off to a good start.

On Saturday, Evans had 14 points and five rebounds to lead the Durham Wildcats past the London Lions, 83-73, for their first win of the season in the British Basketball League.

A former Norwich Free Academy standout from Salem, Evans is averaging 9.0 points and 4.5 rebounds through two games as a starting guard.

After earning a master’s degree from UConn and playing basketball for the Huskies, Evans decided to continue his career and education in England.

In a recent email, Durham first-year coach Lee Davie talked about Evans:

“RJ came highly recommended to us by a former teammate of his at Holy Cross (Andrew Keister).

“RJ had three good years at Holy Cross and then played a big role for UCONN as you well know.

“After seeing film on RJ and then speaking to him about his academic desire to obtain a Master’s degree while playing Professional Basketball here in Great Britain, it seemed like a great fit for us both.

“We’re looking for RJ to bring a defensive toughness to our team, someone who can disrupt the offense and force deflections and steals and allow us to get into our transition game.

“Offensively we want to take advantage of RJ’s ability to get into the lane and finish not only in transition but in the half court also.

“On and off the court RJ adds leadership to our young team.

“We have high expectations of this group that we hope will set a Franchise record for wins, leading to our first playoff berth in our short franchise history (This will be our 3rd season in the British Basketball League).”
