On Sept. 25 around 4:20 p.m. at Birch Plains Golf Course on High Rock Road in Groton, I nearly witnessed a tragedy that was only averted by an amazing school bus driver.
Her bus was stopped, lights flashing; a young girl had just gotten off and was about to cross the street into the path of a black SUV barreling from the opposite direction, giving no indication it was going to stop.
The bus driver clearly saw what was about to happen and began sounding her horn loudly, causing the girl to stop and alerting the woman driving the SUV to the imminent danger.
Had it not been for that bus driver, we would have been witness to a terrible and needless tragedy that would have changed the lives of all affected forever.
Following the incident the girl safely crossed the street, the SUV drove off, and the bus driver continued her rounds.
It would be wrong, however, to simply dismiss this incident without remarking how lucky we all are to have such extraordinary people caring for our children as they return home from school.
Though I am sure the bus driver would say she was just doing her job, I feel strongly that she is, in fact, one of the everyday heroes we are blessed to have in America, and want her to understand that every parent appreciates what she did!
