Montville — Remy Bonser scored 20 points as St. Bernard School held off Griswold on Monday, 53-49, to win the Eastern Connecticut Conference Small Division boys' basketball championship.

Anthony Malchiodi added 11 points for St. Bernard, which is 12-5 overall and finishes 9-1 in the division, one game ahead of Windham.

"I'm really happy for our kids to be able to win a title," second-year coach Mark Jones said. "I told them this is something they'll never forget."

Jones said his veterans - namely Bonser, Malchiodi and Paul Pepas - learned a tough lesson from a year ago when the Saints had a big lead in the division race only to let the title slip away late.

"They saw that and they learned from it," Jones said. "And they wanted to make sure that didn't happen this year. We have a lot of talent ... not as much as a Double-L school ... but our kids worked hard this summer and it really paid off. I am extremely happy for them."

In other games:

• Zach Abrahamson had 15 points as Old Lyme trounced Portland, 50-30, in a Shoreline Conference game and qualified for the Class S tournament. Jake Ballachino scored 11 for the Wildcats (8-10).

Girls' basketball

• Lexus Childs-Harris scored 30 points and had a perfect shooting night as New London ended its regular season with a 78-17 win over Wheeler. Childs-Harris was 13-for-13 from the floor, including a pair of 3-pointers, and made both free throw attempts for the Whalers (17-3). She also had eight assists and seven rebounds. Charee Osborne added 13 points and eight rebounds and Jada Lucas 10 points for New London. Wheeler is 4-13.

• Sloane Sweitzer had 17 points and Mary Cate Devlin scored 16 as Old Lyme edged Lyman Memorial, 57-52. Hannah Behringer had 12 points for Old Lyme (10-8). Maggie Tarbox had 15 points for the Bulldogs.

Boys' hockey

• Tyler Herbert scored and Tyler Luke had 35 saves as the Fitch/East Lyme/Ledyard/Hale-Ray co-op lost to Norwalk/McMahon, 3-1. The Eagles are 1-15.
