First lady Michelle Obama is slated to attend a keel-laying Monday for the submarine Illinois at General Dynamics Electric Boat’s Quonset Point facility in North Kingston, R.I., the submarine maker announced Wednesday.
The event is the ceremonial start of construction for the 13th Virginia-class submarine, according to a statement from General Dynamics Electric Boat.
Michelle Obama, the ship sponsor, will provide remarks and authenticate the keel by chalking her initials onto a metal plate. Her initials will then be welded to the plate, which will be permanently affixed to the submarine.
Members of Congress and U.S. Navy leadership are expected to participate in the 1:30 p.m. event.
A live video and audio webcast of the keel-laying will be available at www.powerstationevents.com/GDEB-USS_Illinois.php.
Webcast coverage will begin at 1:30 p.m. Monday.
