New London — More than 1,000 Connecticut Light & Power customers in the city were without power for two hours tonight after a car hit a utility pole with a high-voltage cable at the intersection of Ann and Shaw streets at 5:15 p.m.
Fire Department Battalion Chief Keith Nichols said the wires caught fire and CL & P had to shut power to the area. The man driving the car was taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries.
Some of those without power were near the intersection of Bank and Howard streets and along Pequot Avenue. A CL & P spokeswoman said the power was restored to the 1,066 customers by 7:10 p.m. but crews remained on the scene repairing the pole and a cable.
