Jim and Celena Drury of Pawcatuck recently celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary.
Celena McMahon was born and raised in Pawcatuck, while Jim Drury was born in Newport, R.I., lived in Jamestown, R.I., until he was six years old, and then moved to Pawcatuck.
Jim and Celena were married at 10:30 a.m., on July 4, 1964, at St. Michael Church with Monsignor John F. X. Quinn presiding. A reception followed at the Greenhaven Inn in Pawcatuck. The maid of honor was the bride's sister, Joan (McMahon) Finizio, and the bridesmaids were Ms. Mary (Leone) Patton, Betty (O'Connor) Polzella and Sonya Celeste. The best man was the groom's brother, Gerald Drury, and the groomsmen were Herb Arnold, Sam Greene and Bob Senior.
The couple honeymooned in New Hampshire before moving to Bermuda for three years, where Jim was on active duty in the U.S. Air Force.
After eight years in the U.S. Air Force, Jim returned to Pawcatuck, worked at Pfizer and earned a BA in 1972 from the University of Rhode Island. In 2004, Jim retired from Pfizer as a senior staff buyer in the purchasing department.
Celena, a graduate of St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in Hartford, worked as an associate director of Nursing at the Westerly Hospital until 1988. She earned a BA from Eastern Connecticut State University, an MBA from Bryant University and retired from Pfizer as a senior clinical research associate in 2004.
To commemorate their golden anniversary, Jim and Celena went on their fourth cruise to Bermuda in late May. Bermuda was also the birthplace of their two oldest daughters. Their third daughter was born in Westerly.
Their eldest daughter, Debbie Cornelius, and her husband, Frank, reside in Bradford. Their second daughter, Theresa Gaunt, and her husband, Dave, reside in Beaverton, Ore. Their third daughter, Sue Jones, and her husband, Griff, reside in Pawcatuck.
They are the proud grandparents of Zack Sanchez of New London, CJ Sanchez and Cameron Cornelius of Bradford, Tonya Gaunt, Devin Honer and his wife, Mary, Haylee Gaunt of Oregon, and Breanna and Avalon Jones of Pawcatuck. They are also great-grandparents to Daemon Honer, son of Devin and Mary Honer of Oregon.
Jim and Celena renewed their wedding vows at a Mass celebrated by their long-time, dear friend, the Most Rev. Paul S. Loverde, Bishop of Arlington, Va., and a native of Pawcatuck.
On July 12, 2014, Jim and Celena were surprised with a brunch at Stonington Meadows hosted by their daughters and attended by their family and friends.
