    High school soccer: Stonington girls win ECC Medium title

    Stonington - Sarah Thomas converted a direct kick with just 9 minutes, 18 seconds remaining as Stonington High School defeated Plainfield 1-0 on Friday afternoon to clinch the Eastern Connecticut Conference Medium Division girls' soccer championship.

    Thomas drilled a perfect 25-yard shot from the right side into the upper-left corner to give the Bears (10-3-1, 7-1-1) the win and the title. Goalie Gabi Hoops did the rest, stopping four shots for the shutout. Stonington held a 13-8 edge in shots.

    "It's been a great season and I'm really proud of this team," Stonington coach Dave Walsh said. "But we've got to play a little better and we've got to score more goals. We can't keep winning 1-0 games.

    "When you get to the end of the season you want to start peaking in games. Hopefully next week we step up and really get our game ready for the ECC (tournament) and the states.

    In other games:

    • Waterford scored all of its goals in the first half during a 3-0 victory over New London in the ECC Medium Division. Claire Hurley (from Jamie Littlefield) and Mia Brennan (from Sally Scarpa) scored for the Lancers (9-3-3, 6-2-2), who were also credited with an own goal. Madison Keefe made seven saves for the Whalers (0-12-1, 0-8-1).

    • Norwich Free Academy qualified for the Class LL tournament with a 2-0 win over Ledyard in an ECC Large Division game. Julia Roderick scored in the game's first minute and Maya Bell added a goal with 10 minutes left in the second half. Katelyn Duca made seven saves for NFA (6-8-1, 3-7) and Delaney Gagnon made five saves for Ledyard (10-4-1, 5-4-1).

    • Sam Lee scored two goals and had two assists as East Lyme beat Fitch 7-1 in an ECC Large Division game. Theresa Durkee had a goal and two assists and Katie Christensen, Haley Ashton, Stephanie deLaforcade and Anne McDermott also scored for the Vikings (13-0-1, 9-0-1). Janeen Porter scored for Fitch (3-12, 1-9).

    • Emma Morgan and Sam Muller scored two goals each as Wheeler beat Windham 6-0 in an ECC Small Division game. Kylie Baker and Marissa Mulhern scored goals, Rachel Serra, Aili Harvey-Berk and Muller had assists and Kylie Garcia made one save for Wheeler (3-12, 3-7).

    • Keelin Hurtt and Sydney Cowell had two goals apice to lead Old Lyme to a 7-0 win over Hale-Ray in the Shoreline Conference. Meredith Aird, Hannah O'Brien and Caleigh O'Neil also scored goals for the Wildcats (11-2, 10-2).

    Boys

    • Santiago Manrique had two goals and an assist, leading NFA to a 6-1 win over Ledyard in an ECC Large Division game. Andris Vital had a goal and two assists and Matt Sylvestre, Seth Strader and Alex Jacobik also scored and Zack Robert and Camden Edmond had assists for NFA (8-4-1, 6-3-1). Trevot Hutchins scored and Evan Bresnan had an assist for Ledyard (6-9, 2-8).

    • Unbeaten Montville posted its 11th shutout in 14 games by defeating Killingly 2-0 in the ECC Medium Division. Josh Handler, assisted by Keith Stronach, scored in the first half for the Indians (10-0-4, 7-0-3), who were credited with an own goal in the second half. Goalie Nik Strickland earned the shutout by stopping five shots for Montville.

    • Jacob Guertin scored both goals as Putnam defeated Grasso Tech 2-0 in the Constitution State Conference East Division. Goalie John Woodard made 16 saves for Grasso Tech.

    • Preston Minor had two goals and an assist to lead Norwich Tech past Ellis Tech, 3-2, in the CSC East. Tied 1-1 at the half, Josh Ries broke the tie and Minor added some insurance. Ries finished with one goal and one assist for the Warriors (4-8-1).
