    Local colleges: Coast Guard men nip WPI in key NEWMAC soccer match

    Worcester, Mass. — Coast Guard Academy stretched its winning streak to five straight with a 1-0 shutout of WPI in a key New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference men's soccer game Saturday.

    Lukas Benedetto scored a first-half goal and goalie Richie Burns had three saves for the 23rd-ranked Bears (13-1, 4-1), who took over sole possession of second place. It was Burns' school-record setting 24th career shutout.

    Caelan Harshaw's pass set up Benedetto's game-winning header just 13 minutes, 34 seconds into the game.

    WPI entered the game ranked sixth in New England Division III.

    "Today's win was a huge one," CGA coach Chris Parsons said in a released statement. "It locked in our spot in the NEWMCA tournament and went a long way in clinching a higher seed as well."

    In other men's soccer games:

    • Connecticut College's winless streak reached five games with a 2-0 loss at Bowdoin College in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. Dan Culi had five saves for the Camels (5-7-1, 2-5-1).

    Women's soccer

    • In a battle between two of the best teams in the NESCAC, 22nd-ranked Conn College dropped a 3-1 decision to Bowdoin to fall into fourth place. Michelle Medina scored for the Camels (10-2, 5-2) and Bryanna Montalvo had three saves.

    • Junior Katie McBride made six saves in Mitchell College's 5-0 loss to Southern Vermont in the New England Collegiate Conference. The Mariners fell to 1-10-1, 1-3-1.

    Volleyball

    • Coast Guard swept a pair of non-conference matches, beating Eastern Connecticut 25-15, 25-15, 25-16 and Salve Regina 25-21, 29-27, 25-23. Ashley Dumont had 11 kills and Maggie Hine added 16 assists against Eastern. Michelle Hernandez had 18 assists and Michelle McGill added 10 digs against Salve Regina. The Bears are 17-8.

    • Amanda Garcia had 12 kills and two blocks in Mitchell's 21-25, 25-19, 25-12 and 25-9 loss to Southern Vermont in the NECC. Nicole Caminiti had 22 assists and 13 digs while Kaisea Caramante of Old Lyme added a match-high 20 digs for the Mariners (4-14, 0-4).

    • Conn College failed to win a game playing against Williams College, the top-rated Division III team in New England, losing the NESCAC match 25-22, 26-24 and 25-17. Ella Johnson had 10 kills and Sam Hunter added five kills and six digs while Emily Arterbury added 23 assists for the Camels (10-9, 4-4). In Friday night's action, Conn dropped a 3-2 decision to Amherst, 25-27, 21-25, 28-26, 25-18 and 15-12.

    Men's cross country

    • Coast Guard ran to second place at the Conn College Invitational, finishing behind New York University. Nick Foster was the top finisher for the Bears, placing sixth while completing the Harkness State Park 8k course in 25:58. CGA's Zachary Velasquez took seventh (26:04) and teammate Jonathan Lash was eighth (26:04).

    Ben Bosworth placed second (25:51) to pace Conn College to third place overall, Connor Trapp was 15th (26:25) and Patrick Dermody 18th (26:34). The top 18 runners earned All-Invitational team honors.

    Women's cross country

    • Conn College placed three runners in the top 18 to place fifth at their home invitational at Harkness State Park.

    Tufts won the meet with 55 points while Stevens Tech junior Amy Regan set the 6k course record in a winning time of 20:57. Ashley Curren paced the Camels with seventh-place finish in 22:29 while Alex Fromme took 13th (20:00) and Emily Watson was 18th (23:14).

    Coast Guard placed ninth overall as Beth Gollin finished 22nd (23:23), Carolyn Smith took 24th (23:25) and Gretchen Krause was 55th (24:08).

    Field hockey

    • Heidi Halsted accounted for Conn College's only goal in a 9-1 loss to second-ranked Bowdoin in the NESCAC. The Camels slipped to 5-8, 1-7.

    Water polo

    • Conn College advanced to the third place game of the Division III Championship tournament with a 16-10 win over fifth-seeded Penn State-Behrend in Washington, Pa. Senior Nick DiLeo had 11 goals, six steals and three assists in two games on Saturday. The fourth-seeded Camels face Washington & Jefferson this morning for third place.
