NCAA basketball roundup / top 25

Jarvis Garrett of Rhode Island drives between Perry Ellis, right, and Devonte' Graham of Kansas in the second half of Thursday's game at the Orlando Classic.

    Men

    No. 2 Wisconsin 68, Georgetown 65

Sam Dekker scored 17 points, Nigel Hayes' acrobatic tip-in with 20 seconds left capped his 15-point day, and Wisconsin needed to rally in the second half to beat Georgetown on Thursday in the Battle 4 Atlantis semifinals at Paradise Island, Bahamas.

The Badgers hadn't trailed in the second half this season, but found themselves down 53-44 with 11:36 left. A 22-6 run put Wisconsin (5-0) up for good, and the Badgers could finally exhale when D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera's 3-pointer rimmed out as time expired.

Smith-Rivera, who was 5 for 5 from beyond the arc until the game's final shot, led all scorers with 29 for Georgetown (4-1).

Wisconsin will face Oklahoma in today's title game. Georgetown, which got 10 points from Joshua Smith, will play Butler in an all-Big East matchup for third place.

Bronson Koenig tied a career best with 14 points for Wisconsin, which survived despite a six-point, 1-for-8 shooting day from standout center Frank Kaminsky.

Georgetown's players didn't get back to their hotel rooms until around 1 a.m. Friday, thanks to the Hoyas needing overtime to beat No. 18 Florida in the quarterfinals.

Less than 15 hours later, they tipped off against the Badgers.

Rest might be overrated: The Hoyas made their first six shots, setting the tone for how their offense was going to work all afternoon - or at least, until the final 10 minutes. Midway through the second half, Georgetown was at 61 percent shooting for the game, but the Hoyas missed eight of their final 10 shots.

    No. 5 North Carolina 78, No. 22 UCLA 56

Marcus Paige scored 21 points and had five assists, Justin Jackson scored 12 points and North Carolina had little trouble on the way to beating UCLA in the consolation round of the Battle 4 Atlantis.

Isaiah Hicks and J.P. Tokoto each scored 10 points for the Tar Heels (4-1), who closed the first half on a 32-11 run and put the game absolutely away with a 15-0 second-half run.

Paige had back-to-back 3-pointers to get that second run going, as North Carolina turned a nine-point edge into a 62-38 lead with 9:12 left.

Norman Powell scored 15 points for UCLA (4-2), which dropped its second straight. Kevon Looney scored 11 points and Bryce Alford finished with 10 points for the Bruins.

Both teams led for exactly 9 minutes, 40 seconds in the first half, suggesting things were fairly even.

    It wasn't even close.

UCLA raced out to an 18-11 lead. After that, it was all Carolina. The Tar Heels outscored UCLA by 21 points in the final 13 minutes of the half, their reserves outscoring the Bruins' bench 18-0. Theo Pinson slammed in an offensive rebound just before the buzzer to give North Carolina a 43-29 lead at halftime.

    No. 11 Kansas 76, URI 60

LPerry Ellis scored 17 points and Kansas beat Rhode Island in the opening round of the Orlando Classic.

Ellis had 11 points in the opening 20 minutes to help Kansas cruise to a 43-25 halftime lead. The Jayhawks went ahead 31-11 with just over 6 minutes before intermission on Ellis' rebound slam.

Frank Mason III added 12 points for Kansas (3-1), which has a pair of victories since a 72-40 loss to No. 1 Kentucky on Nov. 18.

E.C. Matthews scored 20 points for Rhode Island (3-1), which was coming off a 66-62 overtime victory over then-No. 21 Nebraska on Saturday. Gilvydas Biruta had 16 points and seven rebounds.

Ellis picked up his fourth foul with 11 minutes to play and Kansas up 52-38. A 3-point play by Cliff Alexander 3 minutes later gave the Jayhawks a 59-41 advantage.

Kansas held Rhode Island to 25.9 percent (7 for 27) shooting during the opening half. The Jayhawks shot 46.9 percent (15 for 32) from the floor in the half.

Jayhawks guard Devonte Graham returned and had 10 points after sitting out Monday's 87-60 victory over Rider with a sprained shoulder. He appeared to get shaken up midway through the second half and went to the bench, but was back in with 4 minutes left.

    No. 20 Michigan St. 77, Rider 45

Denzel Valentine had a career-high 19 points, Bryn Forbes added 15, and Michigan State rolled past Rider in the first round of the Orlando Classic.

Valentine hit two long-range jumpers and Forbes added a third that extended the Spartans advantage to 43-15 early in the second half. Another 3-pointer by Valentine made it 76-41 with 4 minutes left.

Travis Trice had eight of his 10 points in the first half to help Michigan State go up 32-11 at halftime.

Michigan State (4-1) also got 10 points from Gavin Schilling.

Matt Lopez scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half for Rider (2-3), which made just 16 shots in 62 attempts (25.8 percent) from the field.

Trice and Marvin Clark Jr. both hit 3-pointers as Michigan State scored the first eight points of the game. Branden Dawson, who missed one game due to illness and came off the bench 3 minutes into the game, closed out the first half scoring with a 3-point play during the final minute.

    Women

    No. 1 South Carolina 67, Wisconsin 44

With the team struggling on offense, South Carolina coach Dawn Staley turned to her freshmen for a spark. A'ja Wilson and Jatarie White responded.

Wilson scored 11 points and White added 10 to help the Gamecocks beat Wisconsin in the Junkanoo Jam in the Bahamas.

After a sluggish start, the Gamecocks got going. They led 15-14 before going on a 16-4 run to close the half. South Carolina scored the first 10 points during its burst which was capped by a 3-pointer by Tina Roy.

"When you have a team as talented as we are, to be able to insert two freshmen to give you an offensive jolt is a great thing. I thought (A'ja Wilson and Jatarie White) did their job by helping us open up the game a little bit," Staley said. "It jump-started our offense and let us play more energized on the defensive end."

    Illinois 77, No. 9 Kentucky 71

Chatrice White scored 23 points and Ivory Crawford added 22 to help Illinois upset Kentucky at the Paradise Jam in St. Thomas.

Illinois (5-0) led 40-39 early in the second half before scoring eight straight, including the last four by Crawford to open a nine-point lead. Kyley Simmons' 3-pointer with 9:45 left extended the advantage to 57-45 before Kentucky (4-1) rallied to cut it to 66-63 with 2:15 left.

Simmons hit nine of 10 free throws over the rest of the game to seal the victory. The Illini will play South Florida today in the round-robin event.

    No. 22 Syracuse 69, East Carolina 58

Alexis Peterson scored 19 points, matching her career high, as Syracuse beat East Carolina and advanced to today's championship in the Lucaya Division of the Junkanoo Jam.

Peterson scored 12 in the first half when the Orange (4-0), after trailing 6-2 early, went on a 14-0 run. Syracuse led 47-27 at the half, thanks to 44-percent shooting and six 3-pointers - against just one for the Lady Pirates (5-1) in the period.
