    Local roundup: Ledyard wrestlers beat NFA 45-25

    Ledyard — Four straight early pins and three late close decisions lifted the Ledyard High School wrestling team to a 45-25 victory over Norwich Free Academy in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Large Division match on Wednesday morning.

    Matt Foster opened the match for NFA (0-1, 0-1) with a 16-5 major decision at 126 pounds, but Samuel Cummings (132), Shane Forrs (138), Josh Rahal (145) and Collin Crader (152) quickly staked the Colonels (5-1, 2-0) to a 24-4 lead.

    Wins by Tony Hong (pin a 160) and Sean Doran (8-2 decision at 170), pulled the Wildcats within 24-13 before Danny Contino won a 2-0 decision over Patrick Mahoney-Balestracci at 180, Michael Sullivan nipped Jose Lotts 5-4 at 195 and Daric Johnson outlasted Khaleed Exum-Strong 7-4 at 220 to push Ledyard ahead 33-13.

    Bo Nguyen (106) and Derek Schultz (120) added pins for the Colonels as did Anthony Gryk (285) for the Wildcats.

    In other matches:

    • Montville piled up nine pins, including six in the first period, en route to a 63-18 victory over Killingly in the ECC Small Division. Noah Caskey (106 pounds, 1:06), Zach Looney (126, 1:10), Tommy Wynosky (138, :47), Austin Concascia (145, 1:17), Doug Delacruz (160, 1:25) and Ian Concascia (170, 1:16) won by fall in the first period for the Indians (7-2) while Joel Morth (120), Emanuel Diaz (180) and Augustine Cornish (28-5) also had pins and Nick Laracuente earned a hard-fought 1-0 decision at 152.

    • Seventh-ranked Windham took advantage of three straight forfeits and cruised to a 51-16 victory over Waterford in the ECC Small Division. The Whippets (7-0, 2-0) also had three pincs while Ben Pickowitz (195) had a pin for the Lancers (3-3, 1-1), Justin Keating (185) won by major decision and Sam Lindblom (138) and Dillon McCarthy (170) each won by decision.

    Girls' basketball

    • Michelle Klinikowski scored 12 points as Ledyard built a six-point lead after three quarters and held on for a 32-28 victory over St. Bernard. The Colonels are 3-3. Kaitlyn Berkel led the Saints (3-3) with 13 points and Caitlyn Dittman added 11 points and eight steals.

    • Montville lost its final game in the KSA Holiday Tournament in Orlando, Fla., dropping a 45-33 decision to Albany (La.) on Tuesday. Brianna Leone led the Indians (3-3) with 12 points and Taylor Lavallie had seven.

    Women's basketball

    • Freshman Mairead Hynes had 29 points and 16 rebounds, her fifth double-double of the season, as Connecticut College defeated the College of Staten Island 74-68 in the consolation game of the Hampton Inn West Springfield/Naismith Classic. Liz Malman added 17 points for the Camels (8-2), who trailed by nine points with just under five minutes remaining before going on an 11-0 run. Hynes was named to the all-tournament team.
