    Local colleges: T-More wins own Founder's tournament

    Montville — St. Thomas More won its own Founder's Tournament in convincing fashion on Saturday afternoon.

    Ryan Funk scored a team-best 15 points to power the Chancellors past Coastal Academy of Belmar, N.J, 86-63, in the championship game of the prep school men's basketball tourney. He was one of four St. Thomas More players to hit double figures.

    UConn-bound Steve Enoch contributed 12 points and seven rebounds while C.J. Byrd added 12 points and Stephen Millhaven had 10 points.

    In the consolation game, Bridgton beat Thetford Academy of Thetford Mines, Quebec, 69-45.

    In other games:

    • Parris Hill contributed 24 points, nine rebounds and four blocks while playing all 40 minutes in Mitchell College's 73-67 victory over Lesley in the New England Collegiate Conference. The starting five accounted for all of the points for the Mariners (5-7, 3-2), who've won four of their last five. Joshua Ford had 22 points and 10 rebounds and Frank Martin scored all of his 11 points in the second half.

    • Coast Guard Academy shot just 34.7 percent from the field and committed 16 turnovers, leading to a 58-48 loss to Clark in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference. Eli Sponseller scored 10 points for the Bears (5-10, 1-3).

    • Keith Porter had 30 points and 12 rebounds for Avery Point in an 81-59 loss to Northern Essex. Dylan Conley added 10 points for the Pointers (6-11).

    Women's basketball

    • Mitchell raced out to a 36-12 halftime lead on the way to a 62-40 victory over Lesley in the NECC. Jessica Shepherd scored 13 points while Dazjavia Williams had 10 points and 10 rebounds and Diamond Thomas added 12 points, seven assists and five steals for the Mariners (4-9, 4-3).

    • Coast Guard took a five-point halftime lead before MIT rallied for a 63-53 victory in the NEWMAC. Meghan Fornaro led the Bears (7-7, 3-4) with 14 points while Alex Howland had nine points and nine rebounds and Gill Gerton added nine points and eight rebounds.

    Women's hockey

    • Maddie Dewhirst scored the game-winning goal with .7 seconds left, as Colby College avenged a 3-2 defeat on Friday by winning by the same margin on against Conn College in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. Stephanie Izzi scored her team-leading seventh and eighth goals for Conn (9-3-3, 4-2-2), which trailed 2-0 after the first period.

    Men's hockey

    • Conn College outshot Hamilton, 31-19, but dropped a 3-1 decision in the NESCAC. Marko Brelih and Pat Curtis scored third-period power play goals to break a 1-1 tie for Hamilton (5-5-4, 4-3-2). Zach Jones scored his third goal of the season for the Camels (6-6-2, 3-4-1).

    • UConn goalie Rob Nichols matched his career high with 41 saves as the Huskies tied Notre Dame 3-3 in a Hockey East game on Friday night. Spencer Naas, Shawn Pauly and Cody Sharib scored for UConn (7-10-4, 4-4-1).

    Men's track

    • Joe Kelly won the 600-meter race (1:25.23) and anchored the 4x400 relay team to victory, leading Coast Guard to a first-place finish at the Coast Guard Winter Invitational. Kelly was joined by James Dawkins, Ryan Hub and Richard Brady on the relay team (3:32.77) for the Bears, who had 229 points. Dawkins won the 400 (52.44) while Andrew Scheffey won the 800 (2:00.73), Brett Foster te 1,000 (2:37.54), Kevin Petow the mile (4:33.82) and Jon Lash the 3,000 (8:53.07). Coast Guard's 4x800 relay team of Scheffey, Foster, Ben Chapman and Andrew Ireland also won in 8:29.42.

    • Conn College sophomore Ben Bosworth captured first in the 3,000-meter race (8:44.64) at the Tufts Invitational. Bosworth qualified for the New England Division III and ECAC championships in helping Conn placed sixth with 37 points. Also for the Camels, Connor Trapp was third in the 1,000 (2:32.59), Alejandro Hernandez was fifth in the 5,000 (15:56.72) and Michael Joyce was sixth in the 5K (16:15.34.). Conn's 4x800 relay team of Patrick Dermody, Jordan Comeau, Zander Mintz and Ryan Leeds placed third (8:32.03) and the 4x400 team of Andrew Peterson, Trapp, Brent Lo and Geoffrey Pendergast finished sixth (3:42.91).

    Women's track

    • Beth Gollin set a facility record at 3,000 meters with a time of 10:39.24, pacing Coast Guard to a second-place finish at the Coast Guard Winter Invitational. Rhode Island College won the meet with 176 points and CGA had 132. CGA's Bonny Turnage placed first in the 800 (2:35.17) while Chloe Benoit won the 1,000 (3:19.45), Monet Masters the pole vault (10 feet, six inches) and Gabrielle Troise the shot put (38-6¾). The 4x400 relay team of Madison Ahlers, Sarah Cummings, Alexandra Cobb and Ashlee Johnson also won (4:20.59) as did the 4x800 relay team of Andrea Barrameda, Benoist, Annabelle Gagnon and Turnage (10:43.74).

    • Conn College sophomore Ashley Curran won the 3,000-meter race (10:26.47) at the Tufts Invitational. Her time was the second fastest in program history and lifted the Camels to a fourth-place finish with 58 points. In addition, Emily Winter won the collegiate 5,000 (18:54) while Grace Sheeran was third (19:25) and Kelsey McGinnis fourth (19:28). Also for Conn, Kim Bolick was fourth in the 3,000 (10:30.18), Haley Syke was sixth in the 1,000 (3:08.08), Mary Goulding was sixth in the 60 dash (8.11 seconds), the 4x800 relay team of Bolick, Curran, Leah Sabatino and Anna Guay was third (10:09.25) and the 4x200 team of Goulding, Emily Shafer, Ashley Bjorkman and Amanda Jacobsen was fifth (1:54.11).

    Men's swimming

    • Ross Garrett and Christian Brindamour each won two events and swam on the winning 400 freestyle relay team, but Coast Guard lost to rival Merchant Marine, 154-145. Garrett placed first the 200 freestyle (1:45.70) and 500 free (4:51.20) while Brindamour won the 50 free (20.75) and 100 free (46.25). The 400 free relay team of Garrett, Tim Dion, Brandon Ledford and Brindamour finished first in 3:12.92 while Londen Thomas won the 200 butterfly (2:00.97) and Ryan Buys took first in the 100 fly (53.16) for the Bears (4-4).

    • Connecticut College All-American Michael Fothergill won two events and teammate A.J. Pite set as school record as the No. 18 Camels lost to No. 9 Williams College, 158-113. Fothergill won the 100-yard freestyle (47.72) and 100 backstroke (52.36) while's Pite's second-place finish in the 400 individual medley set the record at 4:09.72. Other winners for Conn were Drake Freiberg, Stephen Skaperdas and Trebor Lawton.

    Women's swimming

    • Senior Darlene Sao captured three individual events and joined Carolyn Slife, Kelsey Gray and Caitlyn Gever on the winning 200 medley relay team in Coast Guard's 172-124 win over rival Merchant Marine. Sao won the 100 freestyle (54.37), 200 free (1:59.13) and 200 IM (2:13.34). Maddie Heist took first in 500 free (5:39.54) and 1,000 free (11:29.70) for the Bears (3-7), while Patti Eidenire won the 50 free (25.15), the 400 free relay team of Jackie Kokomoor, Eidenire, Gever and Vicky Talens finished first (3:47.28) while Sara Cantrell won the 3-meter diving (249 points).

    • No. 9 Williams College beat No. 16 Connecticut College, 217.5-69.5. All-American Sam Pierce (50 freestyle) and Katie Edwards (100 breaststroke) won events for Conn.
