    Local roundup: Wells named football coach at Bowdoin

    Brunswick, Maine - Niantic native J.B. Wells has been hired as the head football coach at Bowdoin College.

    Wells, who graduated from St. Bernard and Trinity College, had been the coach at Endicott College. The only coach in Endicott history, Wells established the program which began intercollegiate play in 2003.

    Endicott won two New England Football Conference titles and appeared in the NCAA Division III tournament in 2010 and 2013. His career record is 75-48.

    H.S. wrestling

    • Waterford recorded six pins en route to a 49-30 win over Killingly in the ECC Small Division. Ryan Botseas (113), Luther Wade (132), Sam Lindblom (138), Noah Concascia (145), Spencer Sgandurra (152) and Dillon McCarthy (170) had pins and Jake Botseas (160) and Justin Keating (182) also won matches for Waterford (12-8, 4-1).

    • Ten different wrestlers earned wins in Ledyard's 59-16 victory over Woodstock in the ECC Large Division. Derek Shultz (120), Samuel Cummings (126), Christian Fogg (132), Dakota Grover (160), Curtis Patsiga (170), Mike Sullivan (195) and Darin Johnson (220) all pinned their opponents for Ledyard (14-2, 5-0).

    • New London wrestlers recorded seven straight wins by pins in a 59-12 win over Griswold. Efrain Santiago (145), Watson Joseph (152), Jorge Hidalgo (170), Renelson Michel (182), Luis Roman (195), Ansan Wang (220) and Oscar Calcano (285) posted pins while Taren Thompson (106), Pabel Pascual (120), Alejandro Paulino (126) also won their matches for the Whalers (7-4, 4-1).

    • NFA recorded four pins and won six other matches by forfeit en route to a 69-9 win over Bacon Academy in the ECC Large Division. Tim Lee (120), Alec Olsen (132), Elijah Blackwell (138) and Sean Doran (170) had pins for the Wildcats (6-2, 3-1) and teammates Abner Lugo (152) and Tony Hong (160) also won their matches.

    • Fitch and East Lyme split the six matches which were held, but Fitch won seven others by forfeit and won the ECC Large Division match 57-18. Isaac Ervin (182) and John Fenty (195) had pins for Fitch (8-8, 2-2) and teammate Trent Evans (220) also won. Tom Janitori (132), Kyle Bernard (145) and Brian Horton (285) had pins for East Lyme (5-11, 0-3).

    • Tom Wynoski won at 132 pounds by pin for Montville in its 54-13 loss to Windham in the ECC Small. Zach Looney (126) won a majority decision for Montville (12-4, 3-2) and Austin Concascia (145) won a decision.

    • Matt Dowler (113) and Mario Lin (132) won by pin for St. Bernard/Norwich Tech in its 58-20 loss to Lyman Memorial/Windham Tech in the ECC Small. Robert Newton (220) won a decision for the Saints (6-10, 1-3).

    Boys' hockey

    • Ryan Black scored three times as Woodstock Academy downed the Eastern Connecticut Eagles, 5-1. Nathan DeLuca had a goal and two assists for the Centaurs. Kevin Close scored and Jarrett Hebert had the assist for the Eagles (3-6).

    H.S. boys' soccer

    • East Lyme High School coach Paul Christensen has been named a finalist for the National High School Athletic Coaches Association's national coach of the year. Eight coaches from across the nation will be honored during the NHSACA banquet at Minneapolis on June 20. The winner will be named during the banquet.

    H.S. squash

    • Williams School lost to Squash Haven, 8-1. Shannon Desmond earned the victory for Williams.

    Baseball/softball
